Battered Calamari and salad recipe

My children love calamari.  When they were little it was easy for them to easy it with their fingers, so it makes great finger food for little one too.


2 1/2 lbs. squid, cleaned and cut into rings,

2 largecloves crushed garlic,

1 cup flour

1/2 tsp. salt,

1/4 tsp. pepper,

1 tsp. baking powder

a pinch of cayenne pepper,

plain breadcrumbs

oil for deep frying.

1 x wedge of lemon ( for each person)

Lettuce, tomato, spring onion, and tartar sauce – if you like it!


Mix all dry ingredients together, include crushed garlic, but do not include breadcrumbs.

Then add enough water to make a slightly thick batter.

Mix thoroughly.

Dip the calamari rings into this batter, then dip into the plain (unseasoned) breadcrumbs.

Deep fry ( in small batches) for 1-2 minutes .

Do not over cook or they will be chewy ( nothing worse).


Serve with a side salad made up of lettuce, tomatoes, spring onion, and a wedge of Lemon on the side. I also like tartar sauce, but the children don’t.
