Koeksisters- a very South African sweet



This is one of the great homemade recipes, that is also a great children’s party food.

It’s VERY sweet, be warned, but you can freeze them before you cook them, so you could make a few, and more later if you like.

Good for vegetarians, and amazing with a cup of coffee!


Plaited and ready to be cooked


  • 2 kp flour
  • 2.5 ml salt
  • 10ml baking powder … See More
  • 60ml butter
  • 1 egg
  • 125ml water (approx)
  • Oil for deep fry


Cooked, dunked and YUMMY!


  • 1 kg sugar
  • 375ml water
  • 2.5 ml fine ginger
  • 2 pieces cinnamon
  • juice of 1 lemon

Sift the flour, salt and baking powder together 2 times.

Rub the butter and mix until a manageable dough with the egg and water. Knead well.
Let the dough rest 3-4 minutes, and meanwhile make the syrup with the sugar in the water to solve. Add the spices and lemon juice and let it cook up.

Chill well before use.

Roll the dough out to about 1/2cm thick, cut out and platted.

Fry the koeksisters in deep oil.

Put it immediately into cold syrup. Place the bowl with the syrup in a container with ice cubes while users and to keep it cold
